Environmental sustainability, addressing climate change and reducing waste is a mandate that Alectra lives by daily. We have an obligation not only to reduce our own carbon footprint, but to also inspire and demonstrate to others what can be done to help our planet.

Our sustainability successes include:

  • Awarded the 2020 Sustainability Leadership Award from Sustainable Hamilton Burlington for our achievements in the AlectraCARES sustainability program.
  • Consistently reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and with a 23% reduction in 2020, we surpassed our original goal of reducing emissions by 20% by 2026. A new target has been set to reduce corporate operations emissions 38% below 2016 levels by 2025.
  • Our One Planet Program focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste. It has mobilized our employees to implement projects that are resulting in tangible environmental benefits.
  • 6,838 cubic metres reduced over five years through our water reduction measures.
  • 0.10 total employee turnover (year end 2020).
  • Alectra Graduate Fellowship in Sustainability Management is presented annually to a student enrolled in the Master of Science in Sustainability Management (MScSM) program at the University of Toronto.
  • The Ontario Energy Network’s Sustainable Development Scholarship, sponsored by Alectra is awarded to a student enrolled in program with a major focus on sustainable development.
  • In 2019, Alectra established the GRE&T Centre which makes energy innovations come to life by identifying, evaluating, developing, and accelerating emerging, clean, and customer-friendly energy solutions. It is a place where great minds collaborate to power a better tomorrow. The GRE&T Centre focuses on three strategic areas: Enabling E-Mobility, Supporting a Sustainable Grid, and Harnessing Emerging Technologies.
  • Alectra has four facilities that follow LEED standards – two gold facilities in Markham and Vaughan, and two LEED certified facilities in Barrie and Guelph. The new consolidated operations centre to be constructed in Brampton aims to be LEED Gold.
