Alectra invests over $22 million in the electricity grid to improve reliability in Mississauga
Mississauga Capital Projects

Mississauga, ON – Alectra Utilities is strengthening its power grid system in the City of Mississauga. In 2023, Alectra is investing approximately $22.1 million in infrastructure modernization projects as the demand for electricity continues to grow.

With parts of Mississauga’s system reaching the end of its normal life cycle, renewing deteriorating infrastructure is necessary to maintain reliability. This series of infrastructure upgrades will stabilize the existing system and reduce outage impacts in the community.

In 2023, Alectra plans to deliver significant capital renewal projects impacting 30,000 homes and businesses by investing:

  • $12.2M to rehabilitate underground cable via cable injection on Glen Erin & Aquitane, Millcreek Drive & Erin Mills Parkway, Eglinton Ave West & Miss Road, Miss. Valley & Bloor, Fieldgate and Pontrail Drive, Burnhamthorpe & Miss. Road, Main Feeder cable on Cantay Road, Hemus Square, Dixie Road and Winding Trail, and Sir Johns Homestead.
  • $8.5M to renew aging infrastructure including poles, switchgear equipment, and transformers in Central South Mississauga.
  • $1.4 M to install new automated devices for faster restoration in Central South Mississauga.

Alectra is introducing new technologies to increase efficiencies and reduce costs. One of those technologies is an innovative process called cable injection, which repairs, protects, and extends the life of underground cables without digging them up.

For every kilometre of cable injection, Alectra avoids approximately 13 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To date, Alectra has injected more than 820 km of underground cable across its service territories, avoiding over 10,000 tonnes of GHG emissions.

Alectra Utilities is committed to investing in the electricity grid across all 17 communities it serves to support growth and to continue to provide safe and reliable service. Learn more about our commitment to reliability at alectrautilities.com/improving-reliability
