We live and breathe safety day-in and day-out at Elexicon Energy, and we want to enable the communities we serve to do the same. To mark the beginning of #PowerLineSafetyWeek – we are highlighting some of our partnerships when it comes to educating the future generation on power line and electrical safety. It is never too early to learn and keep you and those around you safe! Most recently, we partnered with the Children’s Safety Village in Belleville – complementing our other partnership with Kids’ Safety Village Durham. Both villages offer safety education programs to kids in Grades 1 to 3. Taking place in our own mini-villages, our very own Jeff Lavelle offers first-hand education including everyday household tips for identifying potential hazards. Children are shown overhead power lines and transformers – and the safe distance to stay away (which if you do not know is the length of a school bus – 10 metres). They are also taught what actions to take when encountering a downed power line (something everyone should know): 👉 NEVER touch a power line or anything it has contact with, even with a stick or other object as these can act as a conductor. 👉 If the downed power line is in the road, don’t drive over it with your car. 👉 Always assume the line is energized or “live” and get a safe distance away from it, at least 10 meters or 33 feet as the ground becomes energized. 👉 Look for signs of fire and if you see any, call 911. 👉 If it is not an emergency, call Elexicon Energy at 1-866-579-6819 to inform us of the downed line. We want to empower the next generation to know they do not need to be afraid, but cautious when it comes to electrical safety and power lines. Thank you to Jeff Lavelle for continuing to be an inspiration!
